How can we alleviate tax pressure on homeowners and renters?
It really starts at the state level. And I think that we have to do some work changing our tax structures. But if we’re going to work within what we have, I think that the way that we can alleviate some of the property tax impact is by really being smart with our budget, tightening things up within the city’s budget and working really hard not to raise property taxes in the future.

What’s a specific approach or policy that a community elsewhere in the country has employed to reduce homelessness that you think might also work in Missoula?
I think some of the things that have been done in other communities usually need a lot of investment from private partners. And it really means that it has to be a whole community effort. I’m thinking about some of the tiny home villages and things like that that we’ve seen in other cities. I think that those are super interesting, and something that could potentially work in Missoula, but we’ll definitely need more help from the community.

That fire levy though …
Missoula is just growing so much, and we’re in a tricky spot with firefighters because you can’t just hire one at a time because you need an entire engine unit to work together. We need to do something there but whether that ends up being a levy in the future or maybe a special district, I’m not sure. That also would fund the Mobile Support Team, which is really important for our community.
